Dear historic diary,

I found out what a acid and a base is yesterday. An acid is a substance that can give a hydrogen ion. And a base is a substance that can get a hydrogen ion. The acidity of  a solution is measured in H+. How much H+ that is in a solution is measured on a pH scale. The pH scale’s numbers normally range from 0-14. 8-14 H+ are bases and 1-6 H+ are acids. And 7 H+ are neutral. An example of a neutral solution would be water. There is a pic. of the pH scale below!

Billy: Hey Bob! We have a test coming up and I need to study.

Bob: I’ll help. What do you need help on?

Billy: I don’t understand what concentration is.

Bob: The amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at a particular temp. is the concentration.

Billy: I also don’t get dilute and concentrated?

Bob: A dilute solution has a less concentration, and a concentrated solution has a maximum amount of solute in it.

Billy: Wow! But what is the solubility of a substance?

Bob: The amount that can be dissolved in a certain amount of solvent at a specific temp. is the solubility.

Billy: How does temp. effect the solubility of a substance?

Bob: For a solid an increase in temp. would increase the solubility too. For a solid a decrease in temp. would decease the solubility. But do you know what is cool? For a gas an increase in temp. would decease the solubility and a decease in temp. would increase the solubility!

Billy: That is amazing! Gasses and solids are different.

Bob: I got to go! Hope you do good on the test.

First I’ll give you the facts. An example of a mixture would be a solution. A solute and a solvent are in solutions. For example of a solute and a solvent would be a glass of water and some salt mixed into it. The water would be the solvent and the salt would be the solute.

A suspension is a solution that the solute is not dissolved and the solute  particles are bigger than the solvent particles. Now I will talk about ionic and covalent compounds. Here is were everyone says,” BORING!” But I have to tell you this! An ionic compound is a solute that separates into ions. And a covalent compound is a solute that separates into individual molecules. You can change the freezing point and the boiling point.

Right now I have to give you some info. Mainly because my teach told me to. Respiration is the process of living cells obtaining energy from glucose. Did you know that chemical reactions are used in technology? Well they are! An example of one of these would be catalytic converter. And that happened to be what I am selling! XD Skills! A catalytic converter gets all the unwanted stuff the engine gives it. Such as: Nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and unburned hydrocarbons! And this catalytic converter gets these gasses and changes them into better ones. Then out goes: nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), water (H2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2)! And if you think that was cool, you will be amazed! Did you know that industries use chemical reactants to make useful products? Well it is! It is used in phones!

News Flash!

Dr. Nerd just named the energy that is related to bond. He called it bond energy! For now on it will be called that. Did you know that when ever a bond breakes it sucks in this energy? But when ever a bond is made it releases this energy. “That is amazing!”, quote from some guy. Today a different scientist by the name of Dr. Geek found out that a exothermic reaction releases energy. And a endothermic reaction is a reaction that absorbs energy. I made this new substance that is super strong! It’s called Super Strong Stuff! It’s super strong because I arranged the atoms into a diamond structure. To see a photo of a diamond structure look at the bottom left of this page. A metallic bond is a type of bond use in metals. The metal’s atoms share their electrons equally. Did you that ionic and covalent bonds give compounds certain properties. The photo on the bottom right is a buckminsterfullerene structure. The photo on the bottom middle is a graphite structure.
